Saw another small sluice that I would like to get some feedback on. It is the Gold Saver Sluice put out by the Roaring Camp folks. It is small, and has red primer covered steel riffles that are just straight piece of 1/8 steel set at a slight angle from plumb. The demo guy has the water running real fast and quite a pitch to the sluice. He was running what I call aquarium gravels with very little sand or other fines, and even though the water was coming tumbling down, he was catching fine and bulky gold with each run.

Has anyone used this in a creek? How does it perform with bank run material, or classified material or slower water?

It was a very low price, so it is not much a of a risk, but having bought 4 sluices so far, I am reluctant to buy another to test it.

so go with the one that works the best for you and sell the rest. that way when you find another one you wanna try you only have 2 not 5 to choose from. Just trying to be helpfull and I am in the market for a sluice box cause I don't have one all I have is my dredge.

Interesting approach. If I could only sell my other sluices for close to what I paid for them, my education wouldn't cost so much.

So that is why I ask if other members of of this group have the experience I lack.

Although, in my opinion of course, having the right tool for the job is very important. Actually it’s very important in any trade, Prospecting is no exception. Maybe by taking all the best thing you like about each box and building it into on great box that you’re proud of will solve the sluice issue.

For me I like the Keen a51, it’s just the right size to back pack into any area and I can run a lot of water and I can run just a little bit of water, it all really depends on how you classify your material. Classifying it down to 3/16” you would run the water at a slower rate. ½ “run it a little faster and of course if you do not classify just run the water fast and drop the angle more to blow out the bigger pieces.

In which of these cases would you catch more of the gold??

So the question I have for you is which one of these methods of classification you like to do?

Answer that question and your sluice box dilemma will narrow down to the right box for you.

I like to build things. I like to invent things too. I am currently developing a new style sluice box “double decker” where the fines drop out in the bottom tray and the rest is pushed through a side ripple box to catch the big nuggets. Small light weight and back pack able and runs in any stream. Hopefully I can reveal it at our next club meeting.

Good luck.

I think the affordable sluce should work just fine. The Hungarial style is supposed to give a better riffle effect. I think the set up is the most important as far as recovery goes. That and being in a good gold area.

The idea of the doubledecker has allready been employed by many, its not a new idea, Bob from your club manufactures and sells a bitchen, well made version. The double deacker stops the surges that happen when you throw in a shovelfull of dirt. The drawback is the weight you essentially have the weight of one and a half sluces. clean up is an issue also.

As far as roaring camp and the NoodleHer. Thats a prospecting experience to be had.

So no one has experience with that particular sluice? Cause that is the question that is on the table.

All the rest has been covered in other threads and need not be repeated here.

I do thank the person who called me and gave me their impression, but it did not cover use in the stream, just their reaction to its construction fit and finish. I have seen the unit. I have doubts that it performs well, but perhaps the only way I can find out is to try one this summer.

It looks like it would be an ideal packing sluice, due to its size. If it can really retain fine gold at the speed and angle they show at the show, it will be quite a performer.

I used a longer version of that sluice up at Roaring Camp..It worked pretty good.I got the pile of dirt from them and thats the sluice you run all your material through...They have been using that same sluice for years up there and theres been a whole lot of gold come out of Roaring Camp...Look on the link here on our site for Roaring Camp and you will see the pictures of it ...
